No problem with Tuba bank accounts

FE Report | Sunday, 3 August 2014

Bank accounts of the Tuba Group have not been frozen and that indicates no official impediment for the apparel group to paying wages to its workers even during custody of its managing director, circles concerned have said.
Leaders of the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) earlier at a press conference said that despite their initiative, it was not possible to pay wages and other benefits to the workers because of detention of its owner and lack of cooperation from the banks concerned.
Tuba Group managing director Delwar Hossain was sent to jail by a court on February 9 last after his surrender before it in the case filed in connection with the devastating 2012 fire at the Tazreen Fashions, a unit of the group.
"We even did not pray before the High Court (HC) to freeze the bank accounts of the group so that payment of wages to its workers is not hampered," Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a lawyer of the Tazreen fire case, told the FE Saturday.
Citing his submission to freeze bank accounts of the Rana Plaza owner and subsequent freezing of the bank accounts following the court's order, Mr Barua said he could place such a prayer in the Tazreen case but didn't do so to facilitate payment to its workers.
Three separate cases are pending with the HC relating to the Tazreen fire, he said.
In response to a query, he said the logic for bail to the Tuba owner as 'requisite' to pay wages to its workers is nothing but an excuse to create an issue over the matter.
He further said no company is run in the name of any individual. He argued that if Mr Delwar fell sick after his bail or was to go abroad for several months, then wouldn't the workers be paid?
However, court sources said Mr Delwar secured bail from the HC before Eid-ul-Fitr and is waiting for release from jail.
