No road digging during Ramadan

Tuesday, 1 July 2014

The Communications Ministry has decided to suspend all work involving the digging of roads in Dhaka during Ramadan to lessen traffic congestion, according to a news agency.
A ministry meeting Tuesday decided to plug all road ditches at the earliest.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader told reporters that the city corporation and Dhaka WASA would do the repairs.
The minister said several decisions had been taken, and another meeting, ten days hence, would review the progress.
“The roads under the Jatrabari and Maghbazar flyovers will be repaired immediately. Also the ditches in Shantinagar and different areas in the city will also be filled up,” Quader said.
He said the ongoing development work at Maona, Chandra, Kalihati and Joydebpur would be suspended for a week before Eid and three days after.
Police had been instructed to prevent encroachment by hawkers and illegally parked cars from clogging the roads, Quader said.
Senior police officials and civil society members were present in the meeting.
