No RUCSU polls for last 19 years

Tuesday, 21 July 2009

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, JULY 20 (BSS) : The Rajshahi University Central Students Union (RUCSU) polls was not held in the last 19 years in violation of the provision of the constitution to the student body.
In the back drop of this long gap, the student wing of different political parties and general students have started raising their voice for the long overdue RUCSU polls for solving their various problems. The RUCSU was founded in 1963 as a sequel to a strong demand from the student organisations.
Despite having the provision for holding the polls annually as per the RUCSU constitution, the election to the student union has remained stopped from the academic year 1989-90. A total of 26 RUCSU polls have been held until date. At present the RUCSU building has turned into a cultural centre for different RU organisations.
The last RUCSU election was held in 1989 in which Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) candidate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed became the Vice president (VP) and JSD Chhatra League candidate Ruhul Kuddus Babu the General Secretary (GS).
The RUCSU election was postponed on 22 June 1990 following clashes between the activists of Chattra Moitree-Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir in which one Shibir leader Khalilur Rahman was killed and 100 others from both the groups were seriously injured.
