No scope for controversy over constitution reprinting: Shafique

Thursday, 9 December 2010

Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed Wednesday said the statements of the opposition party on reprinting of the constitution are illogical and politically motivated, reports BSS.
The opposition wants to gain political benefit by raising questions over the issue, Shafique said while addressing as the chief guest at a seminar organised by Bangladesh Archives and Record Management Society (BARMS) at National Museum in the city.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Cultural Affairs Secretary Suraiya Begum and BARMS President Sharif Udddin Ahmed also addressed the seminar.
The law minister said the Supreme Court has performed its constitutional responsibility by delivering the verdict on the fifth amendment of the constitution.
He said the constitution is being reprinted deleting the parts declared illegal in the court verdict. There is no scope for controversy in this regard, he added.
Barrister Shafique said the archives is very important for a country. The documents of the secret trial of liberation war sector commander Col Abu Taher could not be found though the court is asking for those, he added.
The law minister said the old documents of the Liberation war would be helpful for the trial of the war criminals.
The government will take necessary measures to update the laws related to the archives.
He asked the authorities concerned to keep in the museum the dilapidated press that printed the country's constitution first.
