No second chance for DU admission test from next year
FE Report | Wednesday, 15 October 2014
The Dhaka University (DU) authorities decided on Tuesday to cut the opportunity for appearing at the admission test for second time from the academic year of 2015-2016 to ensure fair contest among the candidates.
In previous years students had scope to attend the university admission test for the second time and the results showed a good number of the enrolled students got chance through second time admission test.
The authorities also reduced the existing conditional marks in English part to get admitted into its English Department as almost hundred per cent students failed to fulfill the admission criteria.
Arts Faculty Dean Prof Sadrul Amin, who attended the meeting, told the FE that the general admission committee Tuesday took the two important decisions relating to the admission.
"Only students who will pass the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations in 2015 will be able to sit for the admission test of 2015-2016," the professor said.
Prof Amin said the admission committee has found the second time chance for the students unrealistic as some get one year more time for the preparation while others don't have.
"Apart from taking the second time chance, a good number of students migrate from the enrolled department leaving some seats permanently vacant at the respective department," he added.
He said the new decision of not allowing chance for the second time admission test also will help put an end to the growing coaching business in the country as they will not get time to do so.
Regarding the decision of cutting conditional marks, the professor said they have fixed 18 marks in English part instead of 20 marks, while pass marks in the elective part has been fixed at 8 marks instead of 15.
"Despite the reduction in the condition, some seats of the English Department of the university will still remain vacant as only 17 students passed the elective part under the Kha Unit," Prof Amin noted.
The faculty dean, also a senior teacher of the English department, said they have the seat capacity of 150 students, 125 students from the Kha Unit while the remaining portion from the Gha Unit.
Analysing the admission test results, Prof Amin said after the reduction in the condition some 142 students, 17 students from the Kha Unit and 125 students from the Gha Unit, will clear the condition of the department.
bdnews24.com adds: The relaxation of eligibility criteria has not helped Dhaka University English department get more than 17 candidates from the 'Kha' unit, leaving the authorities to consider getting students from the 'Gha' unit to fill 133 vacant seats.
