No secrets in national broadcast policy: Inu
Monday, 4 August 2014
Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu said the draft of the national broadcasting policy will be placed before the cabinet very soon, reports BSS.
"There is nothing clandestine about it. The draft has been finalised after discussion with all stakeholders and the draft formulated has been on the website for long," the minister said.
A 15-member committee comprising all stakeholders were involved in the process, he informed.
"We have tried to reconcile the interest of all four major stakeholders --journalists, television owners, consumers and the state in the proposed draft," he said.
The 15 members include Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, chief editor and chief executive officer (CEO) of Boishakhi Television and currently president, BFUJ, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former BFUJ president and former chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Golam Sarwar, editor of Samakal and Faridur Reza Sagar of Channel I.
"The draft was in line with the provisions of the constitution guaranteeing the freedom of speech and almost everybody concerned about the matter was consulted," the minister added.
"We have included the best inputs in the final draft," the minister said. "There is no room for speculation, it is all out in the open," he emphasised.
He also said cabinet approval is only directional. To make it into law it will have to be passed by parliament and then the national broadcast commission will be formed.
"It will take some time," he added.
Referring to a question about admitting a news report regarding empowering DCs to cancel declarations, he said, the question of admission does not arise. "The issue never came up to me, so the question of admission does not arise," the minister firmly said.
