No shortage of edible oil, price hike unlikely, says minister
FE REPORT | Tuesday, 10 March 2026
The government has assured consumers that there is no shortage of edible oil in the country and categorically ruled out any possibility of a price hike in the near future.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir made the remarks while briefing reporters at his ministry after a review meeting with importers and traders to assess the overall supply situation of the essential commodity.
The minister convened the meeting in response to recent media reports about alleged shortages in some areas and instances where edible oil was being sold at Tk 2 higher per litre than the standard rate.
According to information provided by importers and refinery owners at the meeting, there is adequate stock of edible oil available in the market, the minister said.
He added that in some places a few shops may temporarily run out of stock, as consumers purchase larger quantities due to panic buying. However, the overall market supply remains sufficient.
Sharing an observation from a recent market visit in the capital, the minister said large roadside shops had ample edible oil in stock, with prices clearly marked on the bottles.
However, in some shops inside the market, traders were attempting to charge two to three taka more per litre while displaying limited stock, he added.
He urged consumers not to engage in panic buying, saying unnecessary competition among buyers could allow dishonest traders to take advantage of the situation.
Responding to a question from reporters, the minister said that, like fuel, there is no shortage of edible oil in the country.
Whether it is fuel, gas or edible oil -- there is no shortage of any of them, he said, urging people not to create confusion by associating the word "crisis" with these products.
