No to additional taxes on English-medium schools
Sunday, 8 June 2014
The government has proposed to increase taxes on the English-medium schools. In my opinion it is not a good decision as we should encourage education. Many parents, despite having a limited income, opt for sending their children to English-medium schools. In today's context it is a necessity and no more a luxury. English is a very important tool of globalisation and we can not think of moving forward without being proficient in English language. It has been observed that English-medium students are much more proficient in English language than those in Bangla-medium schools. When the English-medium students go abroad for higher studies they hardly face language problem; but this is not easy for students going abroad from Bangla medium. Our students of English medium are getting good result in international examinations. Proficiency in English language is greatly helpful for obtaining jobs abroad. In the past we had seen only the rich parents would send their children to English schools, but now children from middle-income families are also sent to English-medium schools.
This prompted sharp growth of English-medium schools throughout the country. Additional taxes on English-medium schools will definitely result in enhanced tuition fees which will ultimately dissuade the guardians of the middle-income families from sending their children to English-medium schools. I hope the government will not impose extra burden on English-medium schools as ultimately it will fall on the guardians. Rather the government should make sure that the English-medium schools do not charge high fees and fleece the common people in the name of various fees like readmission. We must not forget that the English-medium schools are providing good services to our educational sector and we must acknowledge it. They are free from politics and session jam.
