Segunbagicha Society, an association of the residents of Segunbagicha area in the city, demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision to set up Kings College in the UCEP Bhaban to ease vehicular movement in the residential area.
The association at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) said the government had allotted the building to UCEP to provide the society's underprivileged children with education.
"But the Underprivileged Children's Educational Programmes (UCEP), being deviated from its main ideal, is now preparing to launch Kings College, a branch of Cambrian School and College, to protect the interest of affluent stratum," alleged MM Akash , a resident of Segunbagicha.
Akash said Segunbagicha was a very important area of the capital, as some most important government offices including NBR, Anti-corruption Commission and Foreign Affairs Ministry are located here alongside a residential area.
"If the college is established here, over a thousand vehicles will move through the area a day and create a huge traffic jam causing immense sufferings to the residents of Segunbagicha," Akash told the press conference.
The members of Segunbagicha Society alleged the UCEP authorities were not retreating from its decision to launch the college even after Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issuing a notice on May 30 to stop the initiative.
