Nobel laureate Professor Richard R Ernst Monday suggested need-based programmes for Bangladesh to solve its natural and man-made problems, reports BSS.
Richard R Ernst made the suggestion while speaking at the Dr MO Ghani Memorial Lecture-2008, organised by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS), on the topic 'Man and Nature' at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhavan on the Dhaka University (DU) campus Monday.
Presided over by BAS President Prof M Shamsher Ali, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz, former DU VC Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, DU Pro-VC Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, former education minister Osman Farruk, BAS vice president Prof AKM Aminul Islam and Secretary Prof Naiyyum Choudhuty were present, among others, on the occasion.
Prof Ernst termed population growth, poverty, healthcare, education and job crisis as the major problems of Bangladesh.
He said Bangladesh needed international support for combating climate change having devastating impact on the country's socio- economic development.
Adaptation means, he said, development of capacity to adapt to climate change and its possible harmful effects on the life and property and agriculture.
He said Bangladesh needed financial and technical support for capacity building and adaptation to face the challenges of global climate change.
Poor and coastal countries like Bangladesh would be among the most affected countries due to climate change, he pointed out.
He called for mainstreaming of sustainable development policies and including climate-proofing concept in national development initiatives to avoid any possible challenges.
Continued rise in global sea levels might inundate Bangladesh's coastal land posing a threat to the habitat of millions of its population and their livelihood, he said.
