Nomination paper of Rabbi cancelled
Monday, 2 June 2014
The Election Commission (EC) cancelled the nomination of Rafiur Rabbi, considered a frontrunner for the Narayanganj-5 by-poll, for defaulting on repayment of loans, reports bdnews24.com.
EC Returning Officer Mir Sarwar Morshed said Sunday the Bangladesh Bank had pointed out that Rabbi did not repay a Tk 194 million loan taken from Sonali Bank's Narayanganj branch for his 'Sign Knitwear'.
The branch also issued a report on his failure to repay the loan, he said.
An independent candidate is required to submit a list of one per cent voters who support his or her candidature to the EC.
The EC selected 10 from the list submitted by Rabbi, a first timer, but two of them denied endorsing him, said the election official.
The constituency fell vacant after the death of Nasim Osman, an MP from Jatiya Party.
Ruling Awami League decided to leave the seat for opposition JP, which has a share in the government.
