Non-lethal weapons executive seminar begins in city

A three-day 'Non-Lethal Weapons Executive Seminar (NOLES)' began in the city Tuesday with participation of the United States and 13 Pacific countries, aiming to arm military personnel with latest techniques of dealing with matters of war and peace, reports UNB.

Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman inaugurated the seminar as the chief guest in the morning at the Radisson Garden Hotel. The military meet has been jointly organised by Bangladesh Navy and US Marine Corps' Pacific command.

In his inaugural speech, the Air Chief said, "Being participatory nations for UN peace-support operations around the world, the knowledge on non-lethal weapons has particular relevance for all of us."

He further said that the participation of foreign friends in the seminar would further strengthen friendship and benefit one another through exchange of ideas and experiences.

Besides host Bangladesh and the USA, 12 other Pacific regional countries are taking part in the seminar, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, East Timor, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

The seminar is designed to improve ability of the armed forces and other security-enforcing agencies of all participating countries to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and peacekeeping-operation missions, ISPR said.

It will discuss and educate the participants on utilisation of non-lethal weapons and tactics to maintain peace and seeking new ways of handling unrest in peacekeeping-operation mission's scenarios and other situations involving civilians.

A multilateral forum will also be presented in the seminar with discussion on non-lethal tactics, techniques and procedures, equipment, lessons learned, rules of engagement, law of war and planning method.
