Non-stop rain,water-logging disrupt city life
FE Report | Tuesday, 24 June 2014
Non-stop rain for the last couple of days disrupted civic life in the capital causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
Commuters, mostly school and office-goers, faced problems in reaching their destinations on Monday morning due to severe traffic jam and water-logging, triggered by the torrential rain that started Friday.
"Met Office recorded 37 mm rainfall in the city in three hours till 9:00am today," said Bangladesh Meteorological Department officer Abdul Barek.
"Due to active monsoon over Bangladesh heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions during the next 24 hours commencing from noon of June 23," according to Met Department.
It warned that under the influence of heavy to very heavy rainfall landslide may occur at places in the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
Beginning early morning, the rain continued for six hours sporadically on Monday, submerging a number of city streets.
Intermittent rain submerged the city's different areas that also caused traffic congestion. The office and school-goers waited for hours to go to their destinations.
Vehicles broke down on the flooded streets as they were unable to negotiate the sudden water-logging as clogged drains were unable to discharge the water. It created problems for the people, especially women and children. Some of them had to wade through knee-deep water in the low-lying areas of the city.
The wet weather also caused troubles for legions of day labourers, garment workers and the homeless.
Roads in Kalyanpur, Mohammadpur, Asad Gate, Karwan Bazar, Motijheel, Kamalapur, Banani, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Moghbazar, Malibagh, Nayapaltan, Kakrail and Shantinagar, major parts in Old Dhaka, Green Road, Tejturi Bazar and Hazaribagh areas went under ankle-deep water.
Many CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers refused to take passengers to different areas, saying their vehicles would not be able to cope with the water logging in those areas.
A BSS report adds, the civic life in the port city and its adjoining areas became a bit normal Monday in comparison with the last couple of days, as there was no heavy rainfall from morning to noon.
Chittagong Meteorology office sources said it has recorded around 201 mm of rainfall during last 24 hours ending at 12 noon.
It also forecast that heavy rainfall may occur in next 24 hours over the region, and advised to hoist cautionary signal number three for the maritime ports including Chittagong.
After weeklong dry weather, Chittagong and its adjoining areas experienced heavy rains during the fourth consecutive day.
Civic life came to a standstill when two-thirds of the city area went under knee to waist-down water during the last two days. Meteorology Department said they have measured 853 mm rainfall from Thursday to Monday 12 noon.
