Noor Hossain Day today

Thursday, 10 November 2011

The nation will observe the historic Noor Hossain Day today (Thursday) with a renewed pledge to materialise the dream of Shaheed Noor Hossain- the heroic son of the soil who embraced martyrdom for the restoration of democracy in the country, reports BSS. On that day in 1987, Jubo League leader Noor Hossain was killed in a police firing in the city's 'Zero Point' while participating in an Awami League (AL) procession against the then autocratic regime writing a slogan 'Let Democracy be Freed, down with autocracy' on his chest and back. Several others were also killed by police on that day as the opposition alliances led by AL called a hartal in the capital city to oust the autocratic ruler. The sacrifice of Noor Hossain expedited the mass upsurge in 1990 as the three alliances compelled the autocratic government to step down handing over power to a neutral caretaker government headed by Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed. Noor Hossain was a member of a poor family of Nawabpur Road in the city. He used to maintain his family by driving an autorickshaw. A member of the city Jubo League, Noor Hossain took part in every programme of the party. After the killing of Noor Hossain, his family became almost helpless. AL President Sheikh Hasina later provided a job to his brother to help his family. President M Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today paid rich tributes to the memory of Shaheed Noor Hossain on the occasion of the Noor Hossain day. Different political and socio-cultural bodies, including the Awami League, its associate organisations and Shaheed Noor Hossain Sangsad, have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
