Monday, 3 July 2023

FE REPORT
Officials have warned that Sylhet, Netrokona, Sunamganj and adjoining upstream regions in north-eastern Bangladesh are at risk of experiencing short-term flooding due to heavy rainfall until Tuesday.
Low-lying areas in northern Lalmonirhat district may also witness short-term floods caused by incessant heavy downpours, according to Partho Protim Barua, duty officer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
He told the FE that low-lying areas in Netrokona and Sunamganj have already been inundated as of Sunday evening.
In a 24-hour bulletin starting from Sunday morning, weather forecasting agencies have indicated a rising trend in all major rivers in the north-eastern region, with a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in upcoming hours.
There is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the north-eastern and adjoining upstream region of the country in the next 48 hours, as per the bulletin.
As a result, some rivers in the region such as Surma, Old Surma, Sarigowain, Khowai, Jadukata, Someswari and Bhogai-Kangsha may rise rapidly and cause short-term flood situations in the adjoining low-lying areas, it noted.
Due to the chance of heavy rainfall in the adjoining upstream, Teesta, Dharala and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region may rise rapidly in the next 48 hours, according to the bulletin.
Teesta river may cross the danger level at Dalia point in the next 24 hours, it stated.
