Nor\\\'wester kills 16 in four dists

At least 16 people, including four members of a family, were killed and over 45 others injured as a nor'wester lashed Netrakona, Sunamganj, Sylhet and Naogaon districts on Sunday night, reports UNB.
Of them, nine people were killed in Netrakona district, four in Sunamganj, two in Naogaon and one in Sylhet.
In Netrakona, at least nine people, including four members of a family, were killed and 25 others injured as the nor'wester lashed Kalmakanda, Mohanganj, Barhatta and Sadar upazilas at night.
The deceased were identified as Afroza Begum, 26, and her three sons- Rony, 2, Pervez, 9, Rana, 5, -- of Bisompur village; Mamun, 25, son of Alauddin of Noyanagar village in the upazila; Soma Akhter, 9, daughter of Joynal of Haripur in Mohonganj upazila; Habibur Rahman, 40, of Barni village in Sadar upazila, Emdad Hossain, 14, of Gabarkanda village in Barhatta upazila and Araj Ali, 75 of Bishonpur village in Kamalkanda upazila. Witnesses said the violent storm that lasted for about half an hour swept through at least 30-35 villages of the upazila around 11:30pm.
Afroza Begum and her three sons were killed as their house collapsed during the storm at Bisompur village while Noyan died on the spot due to the same reason.
It also damaged over 1,000 houses, 25 schools and uprooted a good number of trees, leaving 20-25 people injured.
The injured were admitted to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex.
People of at least 14 villages reeled under darkness as the storm disconnected electricity lines. Officer-in-charge of Kalmakanda thana Abdul Karim confirmed the incident.
In Sunamganj, four people, including two of a family, were killed and over 20 hurt as a nor'wester lashed Sullah, Derai, Jamalganj, Tahirpur and Dharampasha upazilas last night.
The deceased were identified as Kachu Mia, 35, Baby Akhtar, 8, Sanchu Mia, 65, and Dudu Mia, 40.
In Sylhet, an old woman was killed when a nor'wester lashed Kanaighat upazila of the district on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Alfatunnesa, 60, wife of late Yakub Ali of Gurutpur village.
In Naogaon, Abu Isa, 14 of Baludanga area in the district town was killed when a storm swept over the district on Sunday night.
Besides, a minor boy was killed when a branch of tree collapsed on him while he was sleeping during the nor'wester. The deceased was identified as Piash, 3 of Soasha village in Badalgacchi upazila of the district.
bdnews24.com adds: A Kalbaishakhi' (Nor'wester) hit the two districts at 11pm on Sunday, Abdur Rahman, duty officer at the Met Office told bdnews24.com.
The storm started lasted for an hour, said Netrokona Superintendant of Police (SP) Zakir Hossain. Five people died in Bishampur of Kalmakanda Upazila -- four of them from the same family. They were crushed to death under the roof of their hut which collapsed during the storm, SP Zakir Hossain said.
One death each was reported from Mohanganj, Barhatta and Sadar Ali of Netrokona Sadar, all buried under huts that collapsed. Meanwhile, four people died during storm at Sunamganj's Dharmapasha, Deputy Commissioner Md Yamin Choudhury told bdnews24.com.
The dead were identified as Baby Akhtar, 8, Kachu Miah, 35, Shamsu Miah, 65, Dudu Miah, 40.
