Nor'westers bring rain, storms to Dhaka

FE REPORT | Thursday, 19 March 2026

A spell of pre-monsoon nor'westers swept across Dhaka and several parts of Bangladesh on Wednesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from recent heat but disrupting daily life with gusty winds, lightning and scattered showers.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has warned that similar weather conditions may persist over the coming days, with the possibility of further rain and isolated hailstorms across the country, including on Eid day.
It said that temporary gusty or squally winds, lightning and rain, accompanied by hailstorms in some areas, occurred during the evening.
The Met office said the storm was driven by pre-monsoon conditions, bringing relief from the previous heat but causing disruption to evening activities.
Day and night temperatures are expected to remain relatively unchanged, although some reports indicated a slight drop in daytime temperatures due to the rain.
The Met office has advised caution in the coming days, as similar weather conditions are expected to persist, affecting regions across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, from March 18 to March 22.
Areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions may experience similar conditions, with isolated hailstorms possible in some places.
It also said there is a possibility of rain across the country on Eid day, likely to be celebrated on March 21.
