Nor'westers have arrived early this year

Thursday, 4 April 2019

The nor'westers usually hit Dhaka and other areas around mid-April or near the first month of the Bangla New Year. But this year, the nor'westers began on March 31. The sudden storm caused the death of at least three people only in Dhaka. There were reports of more deaths outside the capital. Several people were injured as numerous trees and electric poles were uprooted by the strong winds. Seasonal crops were affected, many small water vessels capsized and many shanties were seriously damaged. The storm was so severe that traffic on the roads had to stop and commuters had to look for shelter from the storm.
Weather experts have blameclimate change and deforestation for such extreme weather events.
In recent years the government has adopted a policy to plant palm trees in the areas most affected by thunderstorms. This is a laudable effort. But, we should not depend only on government efforts. People's participation and awareness about the issue can reduce casualties and losses.
