Not enough space for potatoes in cold storages

NILPHAMARI, Mar 28: Shortage of cold storages has created agony among the potato growers in Nilphamari district who are not getting space to store their potatoes there. There are 9 cold storages in the district both of small mini and medium size and their combined capacity to store potato is only 58,500 tonnes. Sources said prevailing cold storages in the district are Northern Cold Storage Ltd. having a storage capacity of 2000 tonnes, Sajeda Cold Storage Ltd 3000 tonnes, Ismail Seed Himagar 11,000 tonnes, BADC Potato Seed Cold Storage 1000 tonnes, BADC Cold Storage 500 tonnes, Alhaj Mobarak Hossain Himagar 8000 tonnes, Mukta Himagar 3000 tonnes, Shawan Himagar Ltd. 15000 tonnes and Ankur Seed Himagar Ltd 15000 tonnes. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said this year's potato cultivation target was in 2267 hectares of land and production target was 3,96,793 tonnes having average per hectare production of 17.50 tonnes. The production exceeded the tagret. Sources added in the prevailing situation thousands of potato sacks remains stockpiled on the premises of the cold storages in the district.
