Nothing should deflect CG from its commitment to restore democracy: British envoy

Tuesday, 25 September 2007

British High Commissioner in Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury has said nothing should be allowed to deflect the caretaker government from its commitment to restore democratic process and hold credible elections as per the roadmap, reports UNB.
"We welcome Bangladesh's commitment to the election roadmap and welcome too the Chief Advisor's (CA) and the Chief Election Commissioner's (CEC) remarks that voters' list and electoral reforms would be completed earlier than planned, and then the election can be brought further forward," he said.
The envoy made the remarks at an Iftar party hosted in his residence to celebrate the collective efforts of all partners in support of the "photo-voter roll" project.
CEC ATM Shamsul Huda also made brief comments at the function attended by leaders of major parties, diplomats, members of civil society and senior journalists.
The British envoy said the positive intention to hold election before the end of 2008 is boosted by the progress that has been made on the preparation of the voter list. The project is ahead of the schedule.
"I understand that this time last week, 1.3 million people had already been registered. This is a genuine success to acknowledge and celebrate," he said.
