NRBs confce begins in city Dec 27

A three-day first Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) Conference-2007 will begin in the city on December 27 aiming to engage expatriate Bangladeshi scholars in economic development of the country.
About 1100 NRBs are expected to take part in the conference to be held in Dhaka Hotel Sheraton, organisers said at a press briefing Monday.
It said four NRBs -- Monirul Islam, Iqbal Z Quadir, ABM Fazlul Karim and Fazle Hussain, and four locals -- Kalim Sharafi, Haripado Kapali, MR Khan and Jamal Nazrul Islam -- will be given Shilpacharya Joynul Abedin, FR Khan, M Ibrahim and Qudrat-e-Khuda awards for their outstanding contributions in various fields.
The organiser said the chief Adviser of the caretaker government, Fakhruddin Ahmed, will attend the concluding function of the conference as the chief guest and distribute the awards.
Moeen U Ahmed, Chief of Army Staff, and Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Adviser of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be present as the special guests at the closing ceremony.
Speaking at the press conference, Kamal Hossain, adviser of the NRBs conference, said there must be a national policy for all expatriate Bangladeshis.
"We are hopeful that the conference will help create a platform for all NRBs, who will be encouraged to contribute to the welfare of the country," he said.
An 18-member advisory committee has been formed to make the conference a success.
During the three-day conference the committee members will chair a number of seminars styled 'The Untapped Energy Mine the Revolutionary Scope of Renewable Energy Technologies for Bangladesh', 'The State and Status of Trade between Bangladesh and the USA and Pending Bills in the US Congress', 'Remittance a Vital Issue of Bangladesh', 'Skills Development in Bangladesh for the Global Market Place: Policy and Practice', 'Practical Challenges in Attracting Foreign Investment-a Comparative Perspective' and 'Investment Opportunities for NRBs in Bangladesh'.
There will be more seminars on 'Patriotism and Liberation War', 'The Success Factors in Arsenic Disaster Presentation and Follow up Actions', 'Maximum Utilisation of Limited Resources and Increasing Agro Productivity in Bangladesh: A Challenge for the Next Decade (2007-1017)', 'Bio-Fuel- A Great Resource for Poverty Reduction and Clean Air', 'The Informal Sector and Urban Environmental Management Legacies in Planning Education', 'Investment Opportunity: 2nd Generation NRBs', 'Drug Policy in Bangladesh' and 'eGovernment in Bangladesh: the Way Forward'.
