An official of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) has been stand released on charge of attacking a businessman with sharp weapon over extortion in Sherpur. Abdul Quader Khan, deputy director of Sherpur NSI, said Akram Hossain, an assistant director of the agency’s local office, has been stand released following the allegation against him. ‘Besides, stern action will be taken against him if he is found guilty in the departmental investigation.’ Sources said Akram intercepted a private car carrying Abu Sayeed Shamim, a businessman and a director of Sherpur Chamber, and his wife at Gouripur in the town on Saturday while going to his business place. Later, he demanded Tk 0.1 million from Shamim as toll. When Shamim refused to entertain his demand, Akram hit him with a sharp weapon in the cheek, leaving him wounded. Akram also hit Shamim’s wife Mitu as she tried to resist him. Being informed, two policemen, including assistant sub-inspector Rabiul Islam, went to the residence of Akram and tried to know the reason from him. However, Akram hit them with the same weapon, too. Angered by the incident, locals caught Akram and handed him over to police after giving him a good thrashing, according to a news agency.
