NSU board pleads for tax exemption

Mr. M.A Kashem, Chairman of the board of governors and North South University (NSU) Foundation, appealed to the government Wednesday to relieve the private universities of their tax burden.
In an exchange of opinion with the newspaper editors and some senior journalists at the newly built campus of the NSU at Basundhara in the city, Mr. Kashem alleged that the government had been illogically imposing taxes on bank deposits and surplus funds of the private universities that are, according to the private university act, are non-profit entities.
The NSU chairman claimed that the private universities, including the NSU, would be able to investment more fund in their development and students' welfare activities if such exemptions are put into effect.
Highlighting the achievements of the NSU, Mr. Kashem said the university that had began its journey back in 1993 as the country's first private university could successfully consolidate its position in the academic sphere both at home and abroad.
He said efforts are on to make the NSU a world-class university and transform it, at least, into one of the leading and sought-after universities in South Asia.
Mr. Kashem said the number of students studying at the NSU has increased to between 8,000 and 10,000. The new university campus with a total area of over 1.25 million square feet has all the modern academic and relevant facilities, he said.
He informed that since the beginning a total of 985 and 4025 students respectively had done post-graduation and graduation from the NSU.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Hafiz G A Siddiqi, Vice-Chancellor of NSU, said quality education has been hallmark of the NSU.
