NSU holds 17th convocation

The 17th convocation of North South University (NSU) was held on its campus in the city recently. President Md Abdul Hamid conferred degrees to 1425 graduating students at the convocation this year.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid attended the ceremony as the special guest while former USA Congresswoman Cynthia Ann McKinney was the convocation speaker. Chairman of University Grants Commission Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, Vice-chancellor of the university Prof Amin Sarkar and Trustees Board Chairman of NSU Trust Ragib Ali spoke on the occasion.
Ragib Ali, chairman of the board of trustees of NSU Trust, said recently the university has raised faculty salaries to the highest level in the country and modified teaching load so that faculty can devote more time to research and student learning.
He said: "The university made substantial progress since its modest inception in 1993 with three departments and 137 students. Today, we have 16,000 students enrolled in recently reorganised 16 departments under four schools. We are continuously trying to improve and expand programmes and facilities to keep up with the required change."
Dr Amin Sarkar said, "While we enjoy full approval of the University Grants Commission to enhance educational quality, we are preparing ourselves for both the institutional and programme accreditation by the accrediting bodies recognised by the US Commission of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), said a press release.
