North South University (NSU) hosted the "NSU Quran Conference and Seerah Exhibition 2025" at the NSU Plaza Area recently, bringing together prominent Islamic scholars and university leadership to discuss the relevance of Quranic teachings in contemporary life.
The grand conference featured distinguished speakers including Shaykh Ahmadullah, Islamic scholar and chairman of As-Sunnah Foundation; Dr Mizanur Rahman Azhari, Islamic scholar and chairman of Hasanah Foundation; Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek, khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque; Maulana Abul Bashar Md Saiful Islam, general secretary of the Insaf Foundation; and Professor Mokhter Ahmad, Islamic scholar and director of Daffodil Islamic Centre.
Mr Aziz Al Kaiser, chairman of the Board of Trustees at NSU, attended the programme as a special guest alongside Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of NSU; Mr MA Kashem, member and former chairman of the Board of Trustees; Mr Benajir Ahmed, member and former chairman of the Board of Trustees; and Professor Abdur Rob Khan, treasurer and pro vice-chancellor (in charge) at NSU, amongst other distinguished guests.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Mr MA Kashem said, "We are deeply moved by today's event. For the first time in 32 years, an event like this has been organised where we were able to express our identity as Muslims."
Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek emphasised that following the guidance of the Quran is essential to earning Allah's pleasure. He noted that the Holy Quran shows the way from darkness to light and helps overcome life's challenges.
Maulana Abul Bashar Md Saiful Islam described the Quran as a complete guide for building a meaningful life, stressing that regular recitation and practice of its teachings are necessary. He added that the Quran provides guidance not only for personal development but also for nation-building.
Professor Mokhter Ahmad stated that the Holy Quran is the best example of how a book can transform someone's life. "The Creator has given humanity two books-one open and one closed. The open book is the universe, and the closed book is the Holy Quran. When we open and reflect on this divine book, new doors of knowledge unfold before us," he said.
Dr Mizanur Rahman Azhari highlighted that Islam is a knowledge-based religion whose teachings are simple and practical. He added that Islam promotes communal harmony, coexistence amongst people of different faiths and cultures, and encourages adopting a balanced and moderate path in all aspects of life.
Shaykh Ahmadullah responded to various questions from NSU students, stating that religious knowledge is essential not only for spiritual growth but also for developing the right outlook on life and strong moral character. "If the youths shape their lives according to the Quran and Sunnah, they will be able to guide themselves, as well as society and the country, towards the right path," he said.
Mr Aziz Al Kaiser remarked, "The words the scholars shared today about Islam will remain the guiding principles in our lives. North South University prioritises treating all religions with respect and dignity."
Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, "Today, I believe that this conference has given our students ample knowledge about our beloved Prophet's life journey. His life teaches us that human beings are not only here for gaining materialistic life; we are here to give our learnings to other people and be kind, passionate, and humble."
On the same day, a discussion titled "Muslimahs' Challenges in the Modern Era" was held at the NSU Central Auditorium. The Seerah Exhibition was held from December 8 to 12 at the NSU Exhibition Hall.
