Number of community clinics to be raised to 18,000

SANGSAD BHABAN, Oct 04 (BSS): Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad Monday told the House that the government would gradually increase the number of community clinics to 18,000 and at present over 9,000 clinics are in operation across the country.
In a written reply to a query from Mosammat Shammi Akhter from women seat the minister on behalf of Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Huq said that the present government had reintroduced the clinics for ensuring primary health services at grass root level.
The minister said that the government was conducting various programmes for ensuring quality health services, nutritional and family planning activities through integrating these issues, he said.
He also said government's nutritional programmes were being conducted through non-government organisations in 173 upazilas for ensuring nutrition to mothers and children.
The family planning programmes are implemented through Family Planning Directorate, he said.
In reply to another query from lawmaker Tarana Halim from women seat, the minister said that the rate of family planning method users had increased to 55.8 per cent at present and the fertility rate has gone down to 2.7 per cent from 6.3 per cent in 1975.
