The number of professionals went abroad taking up jobs remained almost the same in the last two years, statistics of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) showed. According to the BMET statistics, only 387 professionals got employed abroad in 2010 while the number of such professionals was 383 in 2009. However, the figures exclude those got jobs on their own and did not approach the BMET. Apart from the professionals, the data showed, the number of skilled manpower employed abroad was 90,621 in 2010 while that of semi-skilled was 12,469 and of unskilled 279,673. Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) President Mohammed Abul Basher told the FE Saturday that the worldwide economic recession had slowed down the recruitment of manpower in the last two years. Terming manpower a great asset for the country, he said our problem is that we could not send adequate number of professional or skilled manpower. He, however, pointed out that most of the Bangladeshi job seekers abroad were found to be unskilled or semi-skilled. As a result, we could not earn sufficient volume of foreign currency compared to that of the neighbouring countries namely India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he added. Mr Basher said the government's efforts to create skilled manpower are not enough while the private sector is also not interested in this regard as the same does not fetch them enough profit. Besides, our polytechnic and vocational training institutes produce a limited number of skilled manpower, he noted.
