The number of street children may increase to 1.14 million by 2014 in the country said a study report of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Saturday. Two other reports conducted by BBS and Ministry of social welfare showed that about 41 per cent of the street children have no sleeping beds, 84 per cent have no warm clothes, 54 per cent don't get nursing and 75 per cent can't go to the doctor when sick. About 44 per cent street children are addicted to smoking, 40 per cent don't take a bath every day, 35 per have no access to toilet facility. The reports also said nearly 51 per cent children are scolded by other people and 20 per cent are tortured physically, 14.5 per cent street girls' are sexually harassed. The reports were unveiled at a seminar on 'Protection and Development for the Street Children' organized by Social and Economic Enhancement Programme (SEEP), at the Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city. Member and Whip of the parliament Shiekh Abdul Wohab addressed the program as a chief guest where Terre Des Hommes- Netherlands (TDH-NL) country director Mahmudul Kabir was present as special guest. General secretary of SEEP Fazlul Haque Chowdhury, Bangladesh shisu adhikar forum director Kafil uddin, INCIDIN Bangladesh executive director AKM Mustaque Ali, among others were present at the seminar. The reports said that most of the children go out of their home due to poverty, lack of proper shelter and torture by their family members. Fazlul Haque Chowdhury said there is no policy for protecting the street children in the country.
