Number of voters stands at 81.13m

The total number of voters in the country stands at 81,130,973, according to the final voter list submitted Tuesday.The number was 92,441,868 in the 2006 voter list.
Military Secretary of army headquarters Maj Gen Md Shafiqul Islam formally handed over the final printed copy of the full voter list to the Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda in a special ceremony Tuesday at the EC secretariat .
Bangladesh Army had started off the voter-listing operation on June 10, 2007 from a pilot project in Gazipur and completed the field-level registration activities on June 30 this year.
There were 93 million voters found on the voter list of 2006, which was the bone of contention. Awami League complained about huge fake voters that eventually led to the political crisis and changeover in January last year. The list was cancelled as also was the general election set for January 22, 2007.
The number of voters on the new photo-voter list came down by over 10 million.
