Nur Hossain arrested

Sunday, 15 June 2014

Nur Hossain, the man accused of masterminding as well as financing the recent abduction and killing of seven people in Narayanganj, has been arrested in Kolkata. This was reported on Saturday night across various sections of the Bangladesh media, although there has been no official confirmation by the Narayanganj police. Highly placed police and intelligence sources have, however, told different sections of the media that Hossain has indeed been arrested, and would be produced in court on Sunday. Private television channels Jamuna and Somoy were the first to report the alleged criminal's arrest, along with at least two of his accomplices, by the anti-terrorism squad of Kolkata police from Indraprastha apartment complex at Baguiati near Dum Dum Airport about 11:30pm IST on Saturday. It is understood that the drive to arrest Nur Hossain by police in India's West Bengal state stemmed from the request made to Interpol on May 22, by the Bangladesh police force for help in arresting the fugitive since he had fled the country in early May. On April 27, Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah in Narayanganj city. Hours into their abduction, senior lawyer of Narayanganj District Judge's Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted in Narayanganj on their way to Dhaka. Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from Shitalakhya River on May 1, according a news agency.
