Nursery business makes many farmers self reliant in Kurigram

KURIGRAM, Aug 11: Nursery business has changed the lot of a good many poor farmers in Kurigram, a poverty stricken district of the country's northern region.

Many people both in rural and urban areas in the district have taken to nursery business over the last few years.

They have chosen the business following the examples of many others who have become self-reliant by setting up nurseries.

Inspired by handsome profit a good number of people have engaged themselves in nursery business which has already changed their life.

According to official sources and nursery owners, at present there are about 2,000 to 2,500 nurseries in the district. The number was 1,000 to 1,200 just five years ago. The government has also taken up massive plantation to protect the ecological balance.

The programme is being implemented and various kinds of trees are being planted on both sides of different highways and roads as well as on the premises of different office and educational institutions.

The government nurseries have been set up in every upazila headquarters under the supervision of the department of agriculture extension, officials said.

Saiful Islam, 48, owner of "Rose Nursery" at the district headquarters told this correspondent that the nursery business had made him self reliant. He said that he had started nursery business seven years ago.

Saiful said he had taken lease of about 70 decimal of land from Kurigram D.C. Office where he started his nursery business.

Five labourers are working in his nursery where various kinds of fruit, timber, medicinal plants and seasonal flowers are available.

Abdus Sabur (35) manager of Rose Nursery said that there are five kinds of guava here which are Poly, Kazi, Washington, Chinese and Angur. The Angur variety is very tasty. The plant of Angur and Chinese variety sells at Tk 50.

Like Saiful, The nursery business has brought smile on the face of many others.

The DAE expects that the trend of setting up nurseries will continue in the district.
