Nurul Islam laid to eternal rest

Saturday, 6 December 2008

Ganotantri Party President Nurul Islam, who died in the city Thursday after 36 hours' intense fight for life, was laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Shaheed Buddhijibi (martyred intellectual) graveyard with full state honour, reports BSS.
Earlier, a contingent of the police gave guard of honour to Nurul Islam, a leading organiser of the 1971 War of Liberation, at the Central Shaheed Minar where his body was kept to allow his admirers and well wishers to pay their last respect to this non-controversial and dedicated political personality.
The sublime atmosphere of the Central Shaheed Minar immediately turned into a different meaning when the smartly turned-out police contingent presented arms salute and buglers played requiem to pay due homage to this politician of rare qualities.
Before that, a representative of the district administration read out a message recalling the great contribution of Nurul Islam in the War of Liberation.
A nominee of the Awami League-led grand alliance for the forthcoming parliamentary election from Noakhali-1 constituency, Nurul Islam suffered severe burn injuries in a mysterious fire at his Lalmatia apartment in the early hours of Wednesday. His only son Tahomar Islam was already burnt alive in the blaze.
He was immediately rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and thereafter to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where he breathed his last at around 4:30pm Thursday leaving behind his illustrious wife Ruby Rahman, a poet and an educationist, and daughter Moutushi Islam to mourn his tragic demise.
Thousands of mourners including politicians, cultural activists, educationists and members of the civil society converged at the Central Shaheed Minar long before the bodies of Nurul Islam and his son reached there only to have the last glimpse of their beloved leader, a lifelong crusader against injustice.
