Occupied road spaces

Friday, 6 July 2007

FREQUENTLY one comes across construction materials, rubbish or other goods stockpiled on sidewalks or directly on the sides of roads . The developers of high-rise buildings specially leave these building materials in a carefree manner not only on the road sides and footpaths but also on parts of the roads.
This raises the question whether the aims of keeping the roads and paths on their sides free for unhindered movement of people and traffic have been neatly achieved. The answer should be obvious. Fast movement of people and traffic has been a chronic problem for the residents of Dhaka city. The application of traffic rules and moves like freeing the roads from unauthorised occupation by hawkers led to notable improvements in the situation. But for a fuller impact, very irresponsible activities of the above type also need to be addressed with the same enthusiasm with which the roadside peddlers of wares were evicted.
