Black flag march on Jan 26, 27

October 28-like attack scare in BNP

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 23 January 2024

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday said their planned black-flag processions, scheduled for January 26 and 27, might come under attack as it has received threats.
"… We've been threatened that if we do the black-flag procession, the consequence will be like the one transpired on 28 October 2023," said BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan.
He said this while addressing a discussion styled 'Shaheed Zia's state philosophy to uprooting neo-BAKSAL' at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
The University Teachers' Association of Bangladesh (UTAB) hosted the event with UTAB president Dr ABM Obaidul Islam in the chair.
"We (BNP) call upon the government to arrange a participatory election… Otherwise the consequences will not be pleasant," he said with a note of warning.
"The Awami League (AL) doesn't work for the people. It works only to feed its own interests," Dr Moyeen told the programme.
He accused the ruling AL of capturing all the democratic institutions of the country and depriving the people of enfranchisement in name of the constitution.
"It's not possible to suppress public mind only by some development activities," he maintained.
"Which constitution allows that the government could have controlled the country's judiciary, executive and legislative branches of the state?" he questioned.
The former minister said they (BNP) wanted to uproot the neo-BAKSAL through establishing martyred president Ziaur Rahman's philosophy by uniting all imbued with the spirit of Bangladeshi nationalism.
Under Bangladeshi nationalism, he said, the country's Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and other tribal people were united. "We don't believe in politics of division."
Meanwhile, senior secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the ruling AL did never show political goodwill or noble to the opponent.
He made the comments at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office the same day.
"People have boycotted election held on January 7, 2024. The government failed to bring voters to the polling centres despite repeated calls and requests."
Meanwhile, Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) distributed warms clothes to cold-hit people outside the party's central office.
