Officials meet today to mitigate crisis

Tuesday, 21 April 2009

The power ministry convened a meeting for today (Tuesday) to evolve strategies for mitigating the nagging electricity crisis, reports UNB.
All the top officials of the entities in the power sector have been asked to attend the meeting at 11am in the Power Division.
The erratic power-supply situation improved following a meeting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina early this month.
After the meeting, power generation had increased to 4,100 megawatts (mws) from 3,600mws. But, within two days, the situation again turned erratic and the generation witnessed a big fall by 500mws.
A number of power plants suddenly tripped, resulting in an unbearable situation in these hot summer days.
Now most of the areas in and outside the capital have to experience unprecedented load shedding. Consumers are now just getting electricity every alternate hour, no matter whether it is midnight or afternoon or the early hours of the day.
According to Power Development Board (PDB) control room, the country's power generation was forecast to be 3,760mws against an officially recognised demand for 5,000mws.
But power-sector experts believe the demand is more than 5,500mws and the daily supply shortages come to about 2,000mws.
