Olema League chief stabbed in city

President of Awami Olema League Moulana Ilyas Hossain-Bin-Helali was stabbed by a miscreant at the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka on Friday afternoon. Paltan police and witnesses said, a group of miscreants, equipped with a sharp weapons, attacked Helali and stabbed him from behind when he came out from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after saying Jumma prayers. Police arrested a suspected attacker during the incident. Police said they detained a suspected person, Mujahidul Islam, 20, from the spot. He was taken to the Detective Branch (DB) headquarters of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for interrogation. Talking to reporters at the DMCH after visiting wounded Helali, DMP Additional Commissioner (Crimes and Ops) Sheikh Mohammad Maruf Hasan said Mujahidul claimed him as a member of banned Islamic outfit ‘Ansarullah Bangla Team’. “We’re scrutinising the information given by him,” he said. Olema League activists said Helali was assaulted when he was going to the Bangabandhu Avenue to attend a programme on the anniversary of August 21, 2004, grenade attack. Helali was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to a news agency.
