Olive cultivation gaining popularity in Tangail

TANGAIL, Oct 20: The olive cultivation is increasing in Tangail in the recent years. It is a seasonal fruit but profitable, local sources said.
The olive is a kind of plum. Its cultivation is getting popular in many areas in the district. Hundreds of growers are earning a good profit from the sale of the fruit.
Growers are cultivating the fruit abundantly across the district sources said. In the current year the growers are expecting a good yield of the fruit.
An olive grower Amjad Ali), son of Haroo Miah under Mirzapur upazila said he has been cultivating olive for the last five years and selling it in good price in the market. Witnessing his success, many people of his area have started olive cultivation, he added.
Horticulturist Md. Ripon,Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) told this correspondent, they have advised the farmers to cultivate olive, because its cultivation is profitable and its production coast is less than other fruits.
The soil of the many areas of the district such as Mirzapur, Modhupur, Shakhipur, Ghatail, Delduar and Tangail sadar are suitable for the olive farming, DAE informed.
A number of farmers of the area said they have been cultivating the fruit in their homestead as well as other land for many years and selling those at a good price.
Office sources said they are providing the farmers quality saplings and latest technology and advice in order to boost yield of the fruit.
High lands are better to cultivate olive than the lowlands, so thats why its farming is gaining popularity in high land area of the district, the sources added.
