OMCH nursing institute closed sine die

SYLHET, May 20 (UNB): The authorities declared Tuesday the Nursing Institute at the Osmani Medical College Hospital closed for an indefinite period following a demonstration waged by its students.
The decision was taken at a meeting by the authorities as nurses at the medical college hospital continued their indefinite work abstention protesting the alleged assault on one of their colleagues by some interns.
Confirming the decision, Tonmoy Bhattacharya, assistant director of the hospital, said the nursing institute has been closed for an indefinite period to avert any untoward situation and students have been asked to vacate their dormitories by 6:00 pm Tuesday.
Hearing the news of the closure, the agitating nursing students staged a demonstration in front of the institute against the shutdown. They announced to continue the work abstention programme until their demands are met.
Campus sources said two interns --Tofail Ahmed and Jonny -- locked in an altercation with Proloy, a male nurse, over bringing the prescriptions of the patients around 12:30 amĀ Monday.
At one stage, Tofail, Jonny and some other interns beat up Proloy, leaving him injured. Four other nurses were also injured when they tried to save Proloy.
