OMS brings rice prices down in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Oct 19 (BSS) : The Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice brought down market price of course variety rice by Taka four on an average in the rural and urban areas in Rangpur division, officials, market sources and consumers said.
The programme was launched since September 26 last and onwards in the cities, towns and all 58 upazilas in eight districts of the division and each person purchases up to five kg rice at Taka 24 per kg.
As a result, market price of coarse variety rice came down from Taka 36 per kg to Taka 32 in the urban and semi-urban areas and to Taka 31 in the rural areas of the division, the consumers said.
The consumers, however, requested the government for increasing number of OMS centres.
In Rangpur city, 10 dealers have been selling three tonnes OMS rice daily using trucks at different points and hundreds of the poor, day-labourers, workers and their wives or children and the commoners purchasing by waiting in longer queues.
While the other 38 dealers including five dealers in each of the other seven upazilas and three dealers in Haragach pourashava are selling one tonne rice a day in Rangpur.
In Dinajpur, 46 dealers including 10 sealers in Sadar upazila and three dealers in each of the other 12 upazilas have been selling one tonne of OMS rice everyday.
Similarly, OMS sales of rice has been continuing in the other districts of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts in Rangpur division.
