RANGPUR 20: The Open Market Sale (OMS) rice is being sold in the black markets in Rangpur Sadar, causing utter sufferings to the poor people, sources said.
A large number of poor and low income persons rush to the sale centres everyday to procure OMS rice but they return empty handed after waiting in long queues for hours.
These people are told that the stocks at the centres have been exhausted.
It is alleged that some dishonest dealers sell OMS rice in the black markets. The OMS rice procured openly from the dealers is found to be sold at Tk 28 to 30 per Kg in the local market without any intervention by the law enforcing agencies.
When contacted the district controller of food Mohsin Ali expressed his ignorance of such sells of OMS rice by the dealers in the black markets. He said the corrupt dealers will not be spared, if detected.
The food department has appointed 10 dealers at Rangpur sadar for selling rice at Tk 24 per Kg in the open market.
A group of corrupt dealers are earning huge amount of money by selling 30 to 40 per cent of OMS rice stocks in the black market. As a result the OMS sale of rice launched by the government from September 23 so far yielded no impact on the soaring price in Rangpur.
