On doctors\\\' strike in Rajshahi

Wednesday, 2 April 2014

Doctors in Rajshahi have gone on a wildcat strike since Thursday evening. Public and private hospitals, clinics have downed their shutters holding thousands of patients hostage. Why doctors are on strike? They are on strike because a court in Rajshahi sent a doctor to jail cancelling his bail. Why the court sent a doctor to jail? The court sent the doctor to jail because of specific charges brought against him in a case over the death of a patient, allegedly due to wrong treatment by the accused doctor in his clinic. Is it the only occasion a court orders sending a person to jail on charge of killing or causing death to a fellow citizen? This is not the only occasion. This is in line with the law of the land. If a doctor is murdered, the alleged killers or anybody responsible for the death are sent to jail in the same manner, and this happened over the killing of doctors in a number of cases in the recent or distant past.
What happens if doctors refrain from attending patients? What happens in a situation in Rajshahi over the past three days? There are reports of deaths as well as immense sufferings to patients without any medication.
Even then the doctors protest against incarceration of their colleague and demand he be released. The accused doctor is not an ordinary person. He is the Joint General Secretary of the Bangladesh Medical Association and also the Organising Secretary of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital unit of the Swadhinata Chiktsak Parishad (Swachip).
The death took place in a private hospital owned by the accused doctor. Despite exorbitant expenses, people go to the private clinics for better attention, better services, and better treatment and better facilities. This patient died allegedly due to negligence of the doctors.
The striking doctors said, no medical services would be provided until their colleague is released. They further warned of tougher agitation if their demands are not met.  It is learnt that the striking doctors have suspended their strike until 12pm on Sunday. Why the striking doctors withheld their strike? They withheld their strike because the 'administration assured' them of releasing the accused doctor. Why the administration assured releasing a person charged with murder or causing death to a person? The administration had to make such promise because the accused is a doctor, and many doctors are not human beings and the people are hostage to them.
