One and two-Taka coins

Friday, 6 February 2015

All of a sudden our finance minister declared that coins and paper notes of one-Taka and Two-Taka denominations would be discontinued. He did so because he probably thought that we cannot buy anything with these currencies. I would like to mention here that during my recent visit to the USA, I visited a number of super shops and purchased some goods by paying cash US dollars and got back some copper coins after adjustment of bills. If coins are transacted in USA and one US cent costs less than eighty paisa of Bangladeshi Taka, I do not understand what prompted our Finance Minister to make such a venture.
I am a retired person from a non-pensionable job and I hope that the honourable Finance Minister would do something for the benefits of elderly people like me, who survive on bank interest and savings certificates. Tk 2.0 is still good enough to buy us a bunch of "lal shak or mula shak". I remember that during the second world war, one paisa coin was in circulation with a hole in the middle to limit metal content. I hope, the Finance Minister will not do anything that causes hardships for the poor people and retain one and two Taka coins in the market. Paper notes of the same denominations may be withdrawn if found essential. Coins are a better choice which last longer than the paper notes.
