One awarded death penalty

SYLHET, Apr 17 (UNB): A tribunal here Thursday sentenced a man to death and another seven to life term imprisonment for killing a man 12 years back.
The condemned convict was identified as Abdur Rab, son of late Nasib Ullah of Kodupur village in Baniachang Upazila of Habiganj. Rab remained absconding and is now staying at the United States. The tribunal also sentenced seven others to life term imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more RI.
The lifers are Abdur Rob, son of late Sabu Mia of Kodupur village in Baniachang Upazila, Najmul Huq and Tajmmul Huq sons of Nurul Huq, Islam Uddin, son of Abdul Monaf, Moin Uddin, son of Kajal Mia, Harun-ur-Rashid, son of Aksir Mia and Askar Mia, son of Afroz Mia of the same village. Of them, all but Harun and Afroz remained absconding. According to the prosecution, the convicts attacked and seriously injured Fazal Mia, son of Falik Mia of Kodupur village over past enmity on June 16, 1997. Fazal later succumbed to his injuries on the same day on way to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
