One in seven suffers from kidney diseases

One in every seven people in the country has been suffering from kidney diseases and 40,000 die of longtime kidney failures annually, experts said at a convention and scientific seminar in the city Tuesday, reports BSS.
They said about 20.0 million (2 crore) people are now suffering from kidney ailments which was about 10.0 million 10 years ago. The rate of increase of chronic kidney diseases has now become 18 per cent from nine per cent.
"If the present rate of increase of the disease continues it will rise to 28 to 30 per cent in the next 10 years making the situation alarming," they said.
Kidney Foundation, Bangladesh arranged the 4th National Convention and Scientific Seminar at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
The theme of the conference was 'Stem Cell Transplant in the Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease: Dream and Reality'.
Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Social Welfare Brig Gen (retd) MA Malek attended the function as the chief guest.
National Professor Dr MR Khan, vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Professor M Nazrul Islam and chairman of Dhaka Bank Limited Altaf Hossain Sarkar were present as special guests.
With president of Kidney Foundation Professor Harun-Ur- Rashid in the chair, the function was addressed by vice-president of the foundation Professor MA Wahab, Secretary Professor Muhibur Rahman and Managing Director Tiny Ferdous Rashid.
Brig Gen Malek said thousands of people die each year in the country due to liver, kidney and lung failures and their lives could be saved by replacing stem cells.
Placing emphasis on introduction of cadaveric kidney transplant in the country, he said thousands of lives could be saved through this most modern system.
