One injured in Satkhira police shooting

A man has been injured in what police claim to be a ‘shootout’ with law enforcers in Satkhira’s Kaliganj.
The incident took place at Benadona village around 2:45am in the early hours of Thursday.
Relatives of the injured, Shahar Ali Tarafdar, 32, however, claimed he was a day labourer and not a robber as claimed by police, bdnews24.com reported.
Tarafdar’s wife Amena Begum alleged that he was shot after being picked up from home.
He was admitted to Khulna Sadar Hospital after primary treatment in a Satkhira hospital.
Kaliganj Police Station OC Subhash Chandra Biswas claimed three policepersons were also injured in the ‘shootout.’
Police recovered bullets, bombs and a sharp weapon from the scene, he claimed.
He said police raided a field at the village following a tip-off about a mugging plan.
“Having felt the presence of police, robbers opened fire and lobbed bombs at the police. Police retaliated.”
Police later found Tarafdar with bullet wounds once the muggers left the scene, he said.
He said Assistant SI Shawkat Hossain, sepoys Shariful Islam and Firoz Ahmed were treated in Upazila Health Complex.
Satkhira Sadar Hospital emergency department’s Dr Parimal Kumar Biswas said the bullet hit Tarafdar under the knee of his left leg.
Tarafdar’s wife Amena Begum said her husband was not in good terms with her brother-in-law Rezaul Islam.
“Kaliganj police came to our home with Rezaul around 10:30pm on Wednesday and took away my husband,” she said.
“At late night, police tried to kill him after taking him to an isolated place blindfolded.”
OC Subhash Chandra Biswas, however, refuted the allegation and said Tarafdar had five cases of robbery, extortion and theft against him with the Kaliganj police station.
He claimed Tarfdar’s father Zabbar Tarafdar of Shankarpur village under Krishnanagar Union was also a ‘notorious robber’.
A case has been filed against Tarafdar and unidentified seven people over the shootout.
