One killed, 10 hurt in arson attacks, blasts

The countrywide non-stop blockade, coupled with hartal (shutdown) enforced by the BNP-led 20-party Alliance, crossed the 45th consecutive day on Thursday amid arson attacks, blasts, vandalism and detention.
One person was killed and more than 10 people received burn injuries in arson attacks and blasts while law enforcers detained more than 24 people from various parts of the country for their alleged involvement in subversive activities.
In Dhaka, people caught Sayeem (30), young man on suspicion of hurling cocktail and beat him severely in the capital's Motijheel area in the afternoon.
Police later rushed to the spot and rescued him from lynching before sending him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
At the same time, several hand-made bombs were also exploded by unknown persons at Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram and Fakirerpool areas.
Two persons were wounded in explosions in the capital's Hazaribagh area on the day but their identities could not be ascertained till filing of the report at about 7:30pm.
Later, one of them succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH.
A bus of the Dhaka University was torched in the capital's Mirpur area in the afternoon. But there was no report of casualties.   
Police detained 24 activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir from different parts of the capital in the last 24 hours till 9:00am Thursday, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media wing sources.       
In Tangail, a driver and his helper were seriously burnt as unidentified miscreants firebombed a truck in Bhuapur upazila of the district in the early hours of the 20-party alliance's countrywide hartal.
Police said the pickets threw petrol bomb on a truck that was moving towards the district headquarters at about 1:15am, leaving trucker Uzzal Hossain (32) and helper, Mamun Miah (22) critically wounded at Sar Palsia in the upazila.
In Chittagong, four passengers among eight were burnt when a group of criminals firebombed a minibus at about 12:45am in the port city. The injured people were admitted to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
