One killed, 12 hurt as Pabna AL groups clash

PABNA, Apr 3: A union level Awami League (AL) leader was gunned down and 12 others were injured in a clash between two groups of AL over catching fish in a pond at Peerpur village in Pabna Sadar Upazila Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Amzad Hossain (55), son of Hossain Ali of the village in the upazila also secretary, word No-3 of Bharara Union in Pabna Sadar Upazila.
Police and locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Hosen Ali Mandal and Jalal Uddin Mondol of the village. Both the groups Wednesday sat in a meeting to compromise a previous clash sources said.
At one stage, both the groups locked in clash with fire arms, sharp weapons, iron road, axes, leaving at least 12 people injured in the clash. Amzad sustained bullet injury fired by their rival group. He died on way to Pabna Medical College Hospital at around 8.30pm.
Of the injured, seven were admitted to Pabna Medical College Hospital in critical condition. They are Potu Biswas (60), Mohammad Al Amin (34), Mukul Ali (25), Yunus Sheikh (45), Ajmat Ali (18), Rezaul Karim (35) and Afsar Ali Mandal (35).
Kazi Haniful Islam, officer in-charge (OC) of Pabna Sadar police station said the body was sent to Pabna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. No case was filed in this connection but additional police deployed in the area, OC added.

Our Correspondent adds: Ishwardi Jamaat Ameer Maulana Golam Rabbani Khan Jubayer was sent to jail after rejecting his bail prayer Wednesday. Jubayer is accused of 17 criminal charges while the arrest warrant for 12 cases against him was hanging police said.
Maoulana Jubayer contested in upazila parishad polls for the post of chairman in Ishwardi and was defeated.
