One killed, 50 injured in Bhairab clash over naming market
Rail services disrupted as Egarosindur Provati trains halted for six hours

KISHOREGANJ, July 27 (bdnews24.com): A clash has broken out between residents of two villages in Bhairab, Kishoreganj, over the naming of a local market, leaving one man dead and more than 50 others injured.
The violence also disrupted rail services, with the Egarosindur Provati train from Dhaka to Kishoreganj remaining stranded at Bhairab Railway Station for six hours, causing significant suffering for passengers, railway officials said.
The clash erupted around 10am on Monday in the Mirarchar and Akbarnagar areas of Kalikaprasad Union, according to Bhairab Police Station chief Limon Bose.
The deceased was identified as Masud Mia, 30, an autorickshaw driver from Mirarchar village.
Police and witnesses said residents of Mirarchar and Akbarnagar villages had been at loggerheads for years over the name of a market located beside the Bhairab-Kishoreganj regional road in Kalikaprasad Union.
Tensions escalated recently after residents of Akbarnagar demanded that the market be named solely "Akbarnagar Market".
Several years ago, a local arbitration had settled on the name "Akbarnagar-Mirarchar Market".
Residents of Mirarchar, however, have recently insisted the market should instead be named "Mirarchar-Akbarnagar Market".
The dispute had fuelled tensions between the two villages for several days before it turned violent on Monday morning, when residents armed with locally made weapons clashed.
Masud Mia of Mirarchar was among those injured. He was declared dead after being taken to hospital.
More than 50 people from both sides were injured in the violence.
The clash also spilled onto the railway tracks in the Akbarnagar area, forcing the Egarosindur Provati train to stop at Bhairab Railway Station and leaving passengers stranded.
Kishoreganj Railway Station Master Khalilur Rahman said train had been held at the station for about six hours because of the clash on the railway line. It had been scheduled to reach Kishoreganj at 11:30am.
Officer Limon said police and members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were working jointly to bring the situation under control, although it had not yet fully returned to normal.
