FE Report
An alleged criminal was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members in the city's Mirpur area Saturday, the elite force sources said.
The dead was identified as Shahar Ali (35).
Officials of Rab-4 said that Ali, a ringleader of the area, was a convicted fugitive in several cases including seven for murder with different police stations in the city.
Sources said a petrol team of Rab-4 signalled a speeding microbus to stop at around 1:30am at Mirpur-10. Instead of slowing down the speed, the car-driver continued to drive away, raising suspicion among the on-duty security personnel.
The Rab officials came under attack of Ali and his cohorts when they challenged the car.
The security officiails also fired back. At one stage, Ali was caught in the line of fire while others managed to flee the scene, the elite force sources said.
Bullet-hit Ali was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
An assistant sub-inspector of Rab was also injured during the gunfight, Rab sources said.
