FE Report
A listed criminal was killed and two snatchers were injured in separate shootouts with RAB and police in the city's Mirpur, Jatrabari and Shanir Akhra areas Sunday night and Monday.
In the first incident, a team from Shah Ali police station, acting on a tip-off, arrested Akhtar Hossain Kalu (30) from Beribadh Balurmath area in a raid at about 8pm Sunday.
Following his confessional statement, a police team along with Kalu went to the Botanical Garden at the dead of night to arrest his associates and recover hidden firearms.
When the police team reached the area, the cohorts of Kalu started firing to the policemen, forcing them to retaliate, which led to a shootout that lasted for about 25 minutes, said Shah Ali police chief Jakir Hossain.
"Kalu was critically injured in the gunfight while he was trying to escape, however, his cohorts managed to flee the scene unhurt."
He was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on duty doctors declared him dead.
Kalu, who hailed from Madaripur district, was an active member of the notorious terrorist group 'Shahadat Bahini.' He was sentenced to 14 years in jail in an arms case, and was freed on bail one and half months ago after serving six years in jail.
Meanwhile, RAB-men arrested two snatchers after separate gunfights with two gangs while they tried to mug plainclothes RAB-members at Jatrabari and Shanir Akhra areas.
RAB-10 officer flight lieutenant Humayun told the FE that three muggers intercepted some plainclothes RAB-men for snatching at Boubazar in Jatrabari Sunday night.
After getting the identity of the members of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on RAB, forcing them to fire back, which left Mohsin, one of the gang-members, injured, while others managed to escape the scene. RAB also seized a sharp weapon from Mohsin, who was admitted to DMCH for treatment.
In another incident, a plainclothes RAB team was locked in a gunfight with a gang of snatchers at Kadamtoli in Shanir Akhra, while the gang attacked the team at about 1am. After the shootout, the elite force arrested bullet-hit criminal Hafiz, but failed to nab his other associates.
In May, two men were killed and some 18 injured in police 'shootouts', while eight people died in 'encounters' with RAB-members.
